AB  - Cardiothoracic transplantation presents specific challenges. The lack of long-term replacement therapy (such as dialysis for kidney patients) creates a more urgent situation than for other forms of transplantation, necessitating a different approach. This review looks at ways in which the challenges are being met and the integral role of the histocompatibility and immunogenetics laboratory.
